The Bottom Line: The Algonquin is a unique and historic Midtown
boutique hotel steeped in literary history.
What's Special About the Algonquin: This historic hotel is perhaps best known for the Algonquin Round Table, a gathering of writers who called themselves the Vicious Circle. The oldest operating hotel in New York City is nonetheless quite forward-thinking; it was the first to offer electronic door keys, and the first to welcome ladies traveling alone. The tradition continues as the Algonquin offers complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access throughout the hotel. Watch for house cat Matilda in the lobby.
Guest Rooms and Rates: 174 rooms and suites, on the small side. One guest reports opening the closet door and immediately stubbing his toe on the back wall inside; clothes had to be hung sideways. From $160.
